Drips and Disasters

Saturday 31 October 2009 @ 2:17 pm

What a time I’ve had of late it all began with a problem with my tap leaking well anyhow I attempted to find a localised plumber in the local phone directory - who could appear within a week no luck there Anyhow I made up one’s mind to do a search on google for Plumbers in Newcastle. Hit gold with that one there they where online .Anyways I filled in the contact form and within about 10 minutes I took a phone call to arrange an appointment .That’s what I call service. To cut a long story short they arrived the same day and where quite a bit cheaper than the company who would not get to me for well-nigh a week.

Not long after the first problem was settled don’t I get a phone call from a friend alleging somebody has crashed into his motorcar from behind and are abnegating any obligation. Not actually certain how that works as they clearly drove into his car. Well hot on my success with google and the phantom plumbers don’t I get on-line and go searching for a Newcastle Solicitor for him. Merely on the off chance that his insurance policy has some microscopic little clause about legal costs who knows?

On a happier note somebody I know has made up one’s mind to spend some of their redundancy on purchasing a car cleaning business. Not quite positive if they have done as much research as they should ahead of going all out for it .I have assured them that they require a Newcastle Accountant to look at the books as these people know exactly what they are looking at. For the cost it could well spare him thousands if the business concern is going to fold or with a bit of luck the accountant will turn around and say that it seems like a moneymaking business go for it.

So all in all the last few weeks have been quite eventful around here. Looking forwards to a few quiet weeks now with no leaks or phone calls about car accidents.

A Brief Overview in Advanced Obedience Canine Training

Saturday 31 October 2009 @ 1:51 pm

Advanced obedience is to a canine what putting down the toilet seat is to a man - it takes patient training but it can be done. Dog obedience training is one of the most satisfying experiences between a dog and his master. You are not only doing your own self a favor; you are giving your animal a more complete and happy life. Well trained dogs are well-adjusted, self-assured and more intelligent. You can be secure in it’s conduct even if you leave him alone with strangers.

The most important thing to remember in trying to teach your animal is to set your position as the head in your relationship. When he understands that you are his master, it is easier to [train|teach} him the commands he is expected to obey. Confusing the dog in this aspect can be risky; he will be assertive and strive to dominate you. Don’t overcompensate and be excessively mean to show you’re the master; be firm, stand your ground and fix this unfavorable trait as soon as you see it rearing its ugly head.

Make your leadership known by using a strong and sure tone in your speaking. When you give the command to “Sit!” gently push him down in the desired position firmly. You may have to go through several tries with each command, especially in the initial stages. Development from basic to more advanced obedience training is relatively simpler once your dog understands the patterns you’ve set in your teaching classes.

Operant Conditioning is rewarding your animal with doggie treats or praise for correctly doing the command. It is themost effective way to train your pet; it’s what he comprehends. Applaud your dog each time he does what you say correctly. Sometimes, this is easy to overlook but make the extra effort not to. Dogs will get confused easily and recognizing good behavior every time will make certain that he will remember what is right.

Inversely, reprimand the animal whenever he commits a mistake. Do it during the mistake and not after so the dog will understand the error of his ways. Scolding him will also highlight the difference between what is right from what is [wrong|bad}. For instance, if he starts finding the suspicious looking dirt on his path interesting enough to eat, scold him as soon as he does it. Then put appropriate food before him to eat. When he starts eating his own set meal, be profuse in your praise.

To be able to progress in dog obedience training, keep it short and as often as possible. Be repetitive in what you teach. Don’t restrict training your dog during “school time” or set time blocks. Otherwise, he won’t feel like studying during summer vacation, so to speak.

Dogs in movies awe you with the complexity of the stunts required of them. But they all started with sit. Begin with the basics and climb your way up. With persistence and consistency your pet will advance to more difficult commands like growl, leave it, fetch and attack. Employ the same standard in how you trained him earlier and you will taste success in the higher levels.

Now that you’ve got working knowledge of a professional trainer’s guide to advanced obedience training for dogs, it’s time to roll up your sleeves, get the happy dog and commence training!

A Guide to Safely Undertake Asbestos Removal

Saturday 31 October 2009 @ 1:42 pm

Introduction

In recent years the effects of failing to manage the disposal of asbestos in a secure and safe manner has grown dramatically on the health and safety agenda.

Workers who over many years worked in confined spaces where asbestos fibres were present, or in the manufacture of materials or items which included asbestos as a key component have faced serious health issues. It is now widely recognised that the greatest single work related cause of death is asbestos. It is for this reason, that health and safety information highlighting the dangers of incorrect control and the need for safe management and disposal of asbestos contaminated materials is high profile.

What is asbestos?

There are generally three forms of asbestos known as brown, blue and more common white asbestos. Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibre and is mined in various Countries but particularly in Russia, the largest producer, Canada and South Africa. Because of its unique resistance qualities, such as being resistant to heat, electricity and noise, it can be employed in several ways for industrial use or in building construction and also a key component for items such as brake linings and insulation.

Asbestos became widely used in the construction industry in the late 19th Century. Hospitals, factories, schools and farm houses were all built with asbestos containing materials. Its qualities of being resistant to heat, flame retardant and a good insulator meant that it was widely recognised as very good construction material. Although asbestos today is rarely used in building development, many old buildings including long established hospitals, schools, farm barns and houses still contain asbestos in ceilings and walls. It was also widely used as a lagging material to wrap around steam pipes and boilers. Some household products such as early electric ovens also contained asbestos material, due to its excellent heat resistant qualities. Indeed I seem to recall the use of it in a very early electric oven at my grand parent’s house in the mid-late 1960’s. Just think of all those Shepherd Pies she used to make.

Nowadays to find that asbestos is still present within a building, is likely to cause alarm amongst those people living in it. People living close by are also likely to be concerned and very quickly an entire local community will becomealarmed over the dangers of having asbestos close by.

However, as long as the asbestos is well maintained and is not releasing any dust, there is no danger to health. Asbestos becomes a health hazard and is most dangerous when it is moved and if you breathe in asbestos dust, it is this which creates the health hazard.

Asbestos is toxic and it is the dust being inhaled which can lead to serious illness such as breathing difficulties and in some cases forms of cancer, including lung cancer. From the mid-1980’s, countries within the European Union and some of the world’s other most developed countries have banned asbestos due to its high health risk concerns.Consider the environmental benefits of recycling stone with crushing plant and reusing or recycling the materials for use in the reconstruction process.

Why is Asbestos Dangerous?

The breathing in of asbestos dust is the cause of debilitating disease. So, if you work in an environment where many hundreds of asbestos-related particles exist in the air, unless you wear the appropriate face mask protection, you are putting your health in danger.

Of course, many years ago the dangers were unrecognised and whilst asbestos related disease does not affect you immediately, in later life the effects will become more apparent. Currently asbestos is responsible for approximately 4000 deaths per year and every week, it contributes to the deaths of almost 40 tradesmen, including plumbers, electricians, carpenters and joiners. These trades are particularly at risk because the tradesmen will have been employed in environments where asbestos will have been present. The updating of plumbing work in factories, hospitals, schools, houses and factories will have been a common requirement in recent years. Equally, electricians, carpenters and joiners will have been exposed to similar work in their professional fields. My father was an electrician before retiring ten years ago and over a thirty year period, rewired many factory premises, most likely working in asbestos contaminated areas

I used to work for a compressed air equipment manufacturer. The company’s main manufacturing site also included the offices, the manufacturing and assembly plant, the foundry and workshops. The whole site was constructed in the early 1900s and inevitably had used asbestos products within its construction. In the 1990s with much of the manufacturing moved overseas, it was decided to sell the site for redevelopment and the site has now been entirely demolished, ready for reconstruction. But just think how much of the construction material would have contained asbestos.

Before major demolition works could commence, a full site survey including an asbestos survey would have been required to identify and assess how to manage the removal of the asbestos material across the site. Each specific area would have required the advice of an approved asbestos management contractor and assurances of how the asbestos materials would be safely removed and disposed of. Due to the size of the site, this would have been a major task and also a costly one, but an essential requirement to ensure that all regulations relating to the management of asbestos material were adhered to.

Where is Asbestos Found?

If you visit an old building built prior to the 1950s, it is worth taking a look around to see where asbestos has been used and the types of products which might contain asbestos.

Asbestos cement products, such as large sheets of a corrugated material are likely to be asbestos cement sheets. It is distinguishable as a hard grey coloured material in which asbestos has been mixed with cement. It is likely that if the sheets have been used on the roof, that similar flat sheets will have been used for wall cladding.

If a wall has been given a textured coating, then many old wall coating materials contained an asbestos mix to create the texture. On the floor, floor tiles made from asbestos may also be in place. Recognised for its fire retardant qualities, an asbestos spray may also have been used to coat wooden roof beams. Asbestos sprayed on walls and ceilings will have a high content of asbestos and is known to be easily disturbed just by movement and will give off dust. Then there will be asbestos used as a lagging material on pipes and plumbing equipment. So be vigilant when in old buildings, it is likely that asbestos will be present in some formSearch online for approved and licensed asbestos removals contractors or ask your demolition company to recommend their preferred supplier.

Managing and Disposing of Asbestos

Since the banning of using asbestos took effect, the usual method by which asbestos is now disposed is through the use of landfill sites. There are however very strict guidelines on how asbestos should be managed and disposed of.

First you must decide how big a challenge the job is. If you have asbestos removal to undertake in the home then the best advice to remove asbestos safely is to employ a fully licensed asbestos removal specialist. The basic requirements for protection, including the wearing of a dust mask and a disposable overall, are not suggested as the limit of safety precautions and you will be will be much safer trusting this work to a specialist contractor. If you are removing sheets of asbestos for example from an old garage or shed, simply breaking one sheet up will release potentially harmful asbestos dust and fibres. As long as there are no electrical cables and connections nearby, the asbestos removal specialist may treat the asbestos to be handled with water spray before commencing the removal of the material, but this kind of thing is not for the novice DIY enthusiast and should be left to an experienced specialist contractor at all times. Removed asbestos cannot simply be placed within your domestic waste for collection, it must be treated separately and either bagged or placed in a dedicated skip for safe disposal by specialists. Personally, I would always seek the advice of an approved asbestos removal contractor, for any work involving asbestos or even the potential for asbestos.

When the requirement for asbestos removal is much larger, the work should always be managed by a approved commercial asbestos removal specialist. These companies have received relevant training and certification and will have the correct equipment to manage the task effectively, safely and in accordance with the correct regulations. Older buildings may require a dismantling process to carefully remove any asbestos and this work is likely to involve the use of scaffolding or cranes to be able to undertake this work safely. The most important point to remember is that as the customer, asbestos is on your premises. You are responsible for the removal, handling and safe disposal of the asbestos so ensure that you appoint an approved contractor.

To ensure that dedicated skips are used in the disposal of asbestos some waste management contractors operate skips of a dedicated colour and ensure that these are used only for asbestos disposal. I know of one leading UK waste management company who have a two tone yellow and red painted skip used solely for the safe transportation and disposal of asbestos. As asbestos is classed as a hazardous waste material, only landfill sites licensed to take asbestos are permitted to accept asbestos into the site.

I recall a large automotive company going into administration and thousands of brake lining pads had to be removed as part of a major site clearance project. Although they were all boxed, the fact that asbestos had been used in their manufacture meant that a specialist contractor was brought in to manage the removal and disposal of the stock. In today’s environment where recycling is a buzz word, it is very difficult and costly to recycle asbestos. It may be necessary to employ cranes for dismantling or deconstruction of the premises.

Health and Safety Issues when Working with Asbestos

Before commencing any work, if it is considered that asbestos may be present, the contract manager must undertake a complete project plan. No contractor should be placed at risk, in an environment where asbestos is knowingly located.

Through a complete site survey, it must be established if materials containing asbestos are present and the work must be planned to either avoid disturbance or the need to dismantle and remove these materials.

If the asbestos materials are to be removed, it is essential that the work should be undertaken by an [approved|licensed} asbestos contractor, who has completed the appropriate asbestos awareness and training courses and is certificated.

It is also important to note, whether the premises will need to be vacated whilst the work is to be undertaken. If people remain in or near the area where asbestos is to be removed, disturbance of the material will place anyone in the close vicinity of the project in danger. Other considerations and decisions will need to be taken as well, particularly if there is a need to work at height and identify precisely what equipment is to be required to complete the task safely.

All major projects, should be supervised throughout and inspected at various stages to ensure that the work complies with regulation and at the end of the task, and that it is safe for employees to reoccupy the premises.

Of course, throughout the project, the contract manager must ensure that arrangements have been made for the safe disposal of all asbestos waste. For those undertaking the work, vigilance will be required throughout the project to protect their own health. Face masks will be worn, as will appropriate clothing such as a disposable all in one overall. Clean as you go is a strategy employed by asbestos removal specialists as they work through the project to limit the amount of asbestos dust spreading to other parts of the building.

Conclusion

The strict regulations which now surround the handling and management of asbestos will in nearly all cases require that any project involving the dismantling of asbestos materials is managed by a specialist asbestos removal contractor.

Without specialist knowledge, awareness and the correct equipment, any project involving asbestos removal brings potential health risks. Not just health concerns, but for the company and contractor, the need to ensure that the rules and regulations which govern the management of projects where asbestos is present are complied with. Also any company engaging a contractor who does not comply with the correct legislation will be responsible themselves, not the contractor.

Often referred to as the hidden killer, improved knowledge and awareness of the devastating effects that asbestos can have upon one’s health is now well documented. It is hoped that in the coming years we will begin to see a decline in asbestos related disease or illness. Unfortunately until the mid-1980s, for those who had worked in or around environments where asbestos was present, the worry of asbestos related death remains.

Whichever way you look at it, asbestos is a pretty unpleasant substance if inhaled and brings cause for concern if it is present in your premises, so seek the advice of a specialist asbestos removal contractor toperform a thorough asbestos survey and ensure the effective and compliant management of the removal of your asbestos.

5 Guidelines to Help You Deal with Credit Card Debt

Saturday 31 October 2009 @ 1:33 pm

Do you tend to be late when paying your credit card bills? Is your pile of notices from creditors becoming higher and higher? Do you dread you might lose your properties because you cannot lessen your credit card debts?

Being in deep credit card debt is not a thing that can be easily brushed off or treated lightly. Anyone who’s been in this circumstance knows how horrible it feels. However, if you ever find yourself in deep credit card debt, there are things you can do to make your financial situation better than it already is.

Tip #1: Budget promptly.

Do not wait until you lose your house. Make a budget, or redo your budget, as soon as you find yourself in trouble.  How much is your income? Does it cover your expenditures? Assess your circumstance and know which expenditures are essential and which are not. Must you eat out three times a week?  Do you truly need to have all the features that come with your cell phone plan? Must you shop for clothes every month? Your spending budget needs to cover all your fundemental necessities: food, housing, clothes, basic utilities and health-related costs.

Tip #2: Don’t leave your creditors in the dark.

If you find yourself having a difficult time paying off your debts on time, the best way to deal with it is to contact your creditors right away. Reveal to them your reasons for not being able to pay your debts and ask if they can come up with a alternate payment arrangement. It’s important that you tell your creditors that, while you are in debt, you are wanting to pay it off. Don’t allow them reach a point where they pass your situation to a debt collection agency. You can contemplate credit card consolidation debt counseling as well.

Tip #3: Deal with collection agencies.

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act is a federal law evidently stating that debt collectors cannot bug you, give false statements or do anything that is not fair when they are attmepting to collect money from you. Read and comprehend this federal knowledge so you are able to suitably address debt collectors.

Tip #4: Consider credit counseling.

There are groups and institutions that offer credit counseling and debt management service for those who need assistance with their financial problems. A good credit counseling organization can helpassist you to come up with an improved payment arrangement for your credit card debts. You can show this stategy to your creditors for their authorization.

Tip #5: Filing for bankruptcy.

Filing for personal bankruptcy is a last resort to fixing — and the legal way of addressing — your credit card debt. However, remember that if you choose to file for bankruptcy, it will stay on your financial information report for years to come. Thus, you may find it difficult to get new credit, purchase a home or even obtain employment with a bankruptcy on your financial information report.

You can also consider a debt elimination service as an option, simply make sure you complete research on the organization or service you decide to try.

History of the IQ test

Saturday 31 October 2009 @ 1:07 pm

Introduction

The prominent French psychologist, Alfred Binet, first developed the IQ test in response to France becoming a country with education for all children. Before, the only school children were the offspring of the well-to-do. France was now faced with the challenge of educating the masses, and they needed a way to separate those who needed special help from those who were average, and from those who were advanced. At the request of the French government, Binet and a colleague, Theodore Simon, took on the task of developing a test to measure the intelligence and potential of each child. Binet and Simon published their first test in 1905. Revisions to this test followed in 1908 and 1911.

The Early Standards

Through observations made during these early tests, they created the concept of mental age, which was:

    * If a 10-year-old child succeeded on the items appropriate for 10-year-olds but could not pass the questions appropriate for 11-year-olds, that child was said to have a mental age of 10.
    * Mental age did not necessarily correspond with chronological age. For example, if a 6-year-old child succeeded on the items intended for 9-year-olds, then that child was said to have a mental age of 9.

IQ Testing in USA

Henry Goddard, director of a New Jersey school for children with mental retardation, first brought the concept of IQ testing to the United States for use in testing people for mental retardation, also in the early 1900s. A Stanford psychologist, Lewis Terman, revised the test to expand its usability by adding questions appropriate for adults, and establishing new standards for average performance at each age. Terman’s first standardized test, published in 1916, was called the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale. Terman also changed the concept of a mental age into a standardized IQ score, which is the approach still used today.

IQ Tests Today

The history of IQ testing continues to the modern day, where the most widely used modern tests of intelligence are the Stanford-Binet, the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC), the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS), and the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (Kaufman-ABC). Each of these tests have a series of 10 or more subtests or sections of the main test in which all of the items are similar. Examples of subtests include vocabulary (“Define gregarious”), similarities, repeating digit strings of increasing length from memory, information processing, object assembly (putting together puzzles), mazes (tracing a path through a maze), and simple math problems.

Tour Prague, Vienna and Budapest, the Heart of Central Europe

Friday 30 October 2009 @ 1:50 pm

Prague is overcrowded with European tourists, most arriving by bus loads from all corners of Europe, but it is enchanting and a city not to miss on your tour of Central Europe. For the American traveler the heart of Central Europe offers the possibility to experience it by river cruise and cycling.

River cruising offers much better way of sightseeing the picturesque landscapes and romantic towns and villages. View the life go by from the deck of a small river ship. This kind of cruise has nothing to compare it to the impersonal ocean-going liners.

A wonderful way to experience Central Europe is to fly into Prague, spend three days to sightsee this gem of cities, the hundred-spire city, the mother of cities, as Prague is called, then take a train to Nuremberg in Germany to board your small river ship.

It takes six days at leisurely pace to reach Budapest. En route you’ll pass the wonderful German and Austrian towns, starting with the medieval Regensburg, Passau, then tour Melk’s magnificent Benedictine Abbey, wonder the streets of romantic Vienna and finally arrive in Budapest.

In Passau you can take a side trip to Linz, a historic town and picture postcard perfect one. After Melk Vienna is a major stop and a grand old European metropolis it is to explore for its impressive historical treasures.

Of course if you love to cycle what’s better than power your own two wheels and cycle this part of Europe’s best bicycle trails. You can cycle the medieval Greenway between Prague and Vienna and it’s just as enjoyable to do it in either direction.

A great trail to cycle that crosses the Danube and feeds into the Vienna-Prague Greenway is the Salzburg-Prague trail. And once in Budapest, you can embark on the ancient Amber trail from Budapest across Slovakia to Krakow in Poland.

Ideal time to come to Central Europe is May to October, start planning your next  year’s vacation!

Why Install A Home Intercom System?

Friday 30 October 2009 @ 1:39 pm

Intercom Systems can be a great convenience as well as a handy home security measure. They can put you in touch with people in an instant without the need for you to leave what you are doing. Home Intercom Systems can have a variety of functions and features and several different configurations such as Wireless or Hard-wired installations.

How many times have you been interrupted by a knock on the door only to find that it is someone trying to sell you something that you don’t want? When combined with a camera and monitor, a Video Intercom System allows you to see who is at the door and decide if you want to drop everything and let them in or simply talk to them via the Intercom System if it’s someone you don’t want to let in.

In a home office situation Intercom Systems can be especially handy. Breaking your concentration to answer the door for the vacuum cleaner salesman can not only be frustrating but often times it is hard to regain that concentration when you are feeling uptight about the whole situation. Having a link to the rest of the house can also be handy for keeping in touch with what everyone else is doing and also for ordering that next cup of coffee!

Seriously though, a Home Intercom System can provide you with a good level of security as well. Knowing who is at the front gate or door is a big advantage in this day and age. From the most basic door intercom system right up to a fully automated entry system, your level of personal security is increased. The number of home invasions and robberies is enough to make people think twice when opening the door, especially when you don’t recognize the person. With a well set-up Intercom System you can view the person and find out what the purpose of their visit is before unlocking the door and if you are not sure about them simply leave the door locked and ask them to leave. If they are there to commit a crime once that door is open you are vulnerable.

There are many choices you face when looking to buy and many companies also offer additional components that can turn a simple intercom into a complete intercom security system, including fire alarms and the like. The construction methods of the dwelling or office need to be taken into consideration as well as your individual circumstances and what you want the system to do for you. Wireless systems have their advantages with pre-existing buildings, however position and layout needs to be looked at so there are no ‘dead spots’ within the area that you want them to operate in. Hard-wired system are more reliable and don’t suffer from signal loss, however they would be very difficult to install in some buildings.
